Overview

The Gomukh Tapovan Trek is one of the most breathtaking and spiritually significant treks in the Indian Himalayas, located in the Gangotri National Park of Uttarakhand. The trail leads to Gomukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the primary source of the sacred River Ganga, and further to Tapovan, a high-altitude alpine meadow known for its panoramic mountain views, peaceful atmosphere, and spiritual importance.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Day 1: Arrival at Gangotri (3,100 m)

• Reach Gangotri by road from Dehradun/Rishikesh/Uttarkashi • Visit Gangotri Temple & explore surroundings • Acclimatization walk in the evening • Stay: Guesthouse/homestay • Note: Drink water like it’s your job, altitude is already high

Day 2: Day 2: Gangotri to Chirbasa (3,580 m)

• Trek Distance: 9 km • Time: 5–6 hours • Trail passes through pine & birch forest along the Bhagirathi River • Stunning views of Sudarshan Parbat • Stay: Campsite at Chirbasa

Day 3: Day 3: Chirbasa to Bhojbasa (3,800 m)

• Trek Distance: 5 km • Time: 3–4 hours • Landscapes turn more rugged and open • Camp near the base of the Bhagirathi peaks • Sunset views are ridiculous (in a good way)

Day 4: Day 4: Bhojbasa to Gomukh (4,000 m) & Tapovan (4,350 m)

Trek Distance: 10–12 km total • Time: 7–8 hours • Visit Gomukh Glacier (birthplace of Ganga) • Steep climb to Tapovan with moraine & glacier terrain • Reach the legendary meadows under Mt Shivling

Day 5: Day 5: Acclimatization and Exploration Day at Tapovan

• Explore Himalayan meadows & streams • Meditation spot, photography heaven • Optional hike towards Meru base • Just enjoy existing at 4,350 m without dying

Day 6: Day 6: Tapovan to Bhojbasa

• Trek Distance: 10–12 km • Time: 5–6 hours • Descend back through Gomukh route • Stay: Camps at Bhojbasa

Day 7: Day 7: Bhojbasa to Gangotri

• Trek Distance: 14 km • Time: 6–7 hours • Reach Gangotri and relax like you just conquered Everest • Trek officially ends
