Chopta Chandrashila with Deoriyatal Trek

It's known for three things — Tungnath Temple (the highest Shiva temple in the world), the Chandrashila summit at around 4,000 m, and the 360° Himalayan view you get once you're up there. The trail itself runs through oak and rhododendron forest that blooms bright pink and red every spring, and turns into a snow trail in winter. On a clear day from the summit you can pick out Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Trishul, Bandarpoonch, Neelkanth, Kamet, and Dunagiri. It's short, it's got real spiritual weight to it, and the payoff at the top is disproportionate to how little ground you cover to get there — which is why it's such a common first Himalayan trek for people.

During that window the whole trail from Chopta to Chandrashila turns white — it's one of the better winter treks in Uttarakhand if you've got the right gear. The last push from Tungnath to Chandrashila is where it gets real — steeper, and genuinely tough if there's snow or ice on the ground. Expect 4–6 hours of walking depending on your pace and the weather. If you can walk 5–6 km without much trouble, you'll be fine.

Easy. It's about 3.5 km one way on a well-maintained stone path, doable by beginners, families, and older trekkers with reasonable fitness. It only gets harder if you continue on to Chandrashila.

May–June and September–November are the two best windows — good weather, clear views, and the temple's fully open. It shuts down in winter because of heavy snow, and the deity is moved to Makkumath village until it reopens.

By air, fly into Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun, about 220 km out. By train, Haridwar or Rishikesh are the closest stations. By road, shared taxis, buses, or private vehicles run from Haridwar, Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, and Dehradun. Mountthrill's own departures run from Delhi via Rishikesh and Sari Village.
