Har Ki Dun Trek

Har Ki Dun is one of the few Himalayan treks where the mythology is the reason people go, not a footnote — the valley is believed to be the path the Pandavas took on their final journey in the Mahabharata, and villages like Osla still carry customs and a temple tied directly to that story. Add a cradle-shaped valley ringed by Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag, and it's a trek that gives you culture and summit views in equal measure.

October to November for the clearest peak views, or March to June if you want warmer days and greener trail. The trek is open 10 months a year and closed only through July–August for monsoon; December to February brings heavy snow and the trail is often restricted beyond Osla.

No. It's graded easy to moderate and is beginner-friendly, though it's a longer trek than most first-timer routes — Day 4 alone is a 16 km, 8–9 hour round trip. If you can walk 6–7 km comfortably and handle one long day on your feet, you're set.

Yes — solo trekkers join our regular small-group batches, so you'll trek alongside other trekkers rather than alone. It's one of the more common ways people do this trek with us.

Yes. Every batch travels with a trek leader and support staff, carries a first-aid kit, stretcher, and oxygen cylinder, and follows a fixed turnaround time on the Day 4 valley push regardless of weather.

Your trek leader is your first point of contact on the trail and stays in touch with the Mountthrill base team throughout. Sankri is the nearest road-head evacuation point, reachable by mule or stretcher from any campsite on the route. There's no mobile network beyond Sankri, so your trek leader carries the means to reach us in a genuine emergency.

It's graded moderate. The walking itself isn't technical, but it's a longer trek than most beginner routes at ~44 km round trip over 6 days, with one genuinely long day — the push into the valley and back on Day 4.

The highest point is Har Ki Dun Valley itself at 3,566 m (11,700 ft). Sankri, your base village, sits at 1,950 m.

The full round trip, Sankri to the valley and back, covers roughly 44 km. One-way to Har Ki Dun Valley from Sankri is about 22 km.

Low to moderate. The ascent is gradual — you gain altitude in stages across Sankri, Osla, and Kalkattiyadhar rather than all at once — which gives your body time to acclimatise. Staying hydrated and pacing yourself on Day 4 matters more than the altitude number itself.

You should be able to walk 6–7 km comfortably without breathlessness, with no major knee, heart, or breathing conditions. Our 4-week training plan (in the Fitness Guide section) is built specifically around getting you ready for Day 4's long push.

10 years and above. There's no fixed upper age limit, but trekkers above 60 need a doctor-signed medical certificate confirming fitness for high-altitude trekking — the same medical certificate every trekker is required to carry, just with extra attention at that age.

Yes, as long as your medical fitness certificate confirms you for high-altitude trekking. There's no upper age cutoff on this trek, but we'd recommend talking to your doctor about the cold and the Day 4 distance specifically before you book.

Yes — it's graded easy to moderate and designed to be doable without prior trekking experience, provided you're reasonably fit and prepared for the cold.

For the Dehradun and Delhi package tiers, pickup is from Dehradun Railway Station, followed by the drive to Sankri. If you've booked Sankri-to-Sankri, you arrange your own transport up to the base village and join us there.

Dehradun is well-connected by air (Jolly Grant Airport) and rail (Dehradun Railway Station), so getting there is straightforward from most major cities. We don't have a confirmed hotel recommendation to give you yet — if you're arriving a day early, reach out to your trek advisor and we'll point you to somewhere reliable near the pickup point.

The trek passes through Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, so a forest permit is required — we arrange this for you. On your end, carry two photocopies of a government photo ID, two passport-size photos, a doctor-signed medical fitness certificate, and the indemnity form (which we provide before the trek). Trekking insurance is strongly recommended, though not mandatory.

Check the full Packing Checklist above for everything to carry. Gaiters and microspikes are provided by us when the season requires them. All other necessary gear — including winter jackets, trekking poles, and trekking shoes — is available for rent at our base in Sankri.

All meals from Day 1 dinner, camping and homestay accommodation, trek permits, tents and basic technical gear, a qualified guide and support staff, first aid (medical kit, stretcher, oxygen cylinder), and transport between trek points. Full inclusions/exclusions list is above.

Yes. Offloading your backpack to a porter or mule costs ₹350/day and isn't included in the base package price — you can add it at the time of booking.

A guesthouse in Sankri on Day 1, homestays in Osla on Day 2 and Day 5, and alpine tents at Kalkattiyadhar on Day 3 and Day 4. Room sharing is generally twin or triple in tents, and triple/quad in the guesthouse and homestay.

Sankri has electricity, though it can be intermittent, especially in winter. Once you're on the trail — Osla, Kalkattiyadhar, and the valley — there's no power supply, so carry a fully charged power bank.

Purola is the last reliable ATM point on the way up. Sankri may have very limited or no functioning ATM, so withdraw what you need before you leave Purola.

Yes, you can safely leave extra luggage behind at our Sankri guesthouse while you're on the trail, so you only need to carry trek essentials in your backpack.
